However, the urban advantage is not enjoyed uniformly by all urban residents. With urbanization comes economic development and greater availability of healthcare services. Rapid population growth in urban areas of Asia and Africa will bring this figure closer to 70% by 2050, the bulk of which will concentrate in slums or low-income settlements characterized by crowding, insecurity, inadequate housing and limited access to basic services. Urbanization is a global phenomenon with 55% of the global population living in urban areas. ![]()
